Taking inspiration from Lincoln Cathedral’s ‘Magna Carta’ and ‘Charter of the Forest’ Dinners, Caistor Parish Church recently invited parishioners to enjoy ‘Dinner in the Nave’ as part of its fundraising efforts relating to its Heritage Lottery Fund-backed project to repair the roof and reach out to the community.
Free-standing pews were moved to the sides of the church, Caistor Town Hall Committee arranged for the church to borrow tables from Grasby Village Hall, and members of the congregation offered of their time and talent in preparing the setting and a four-course meal with wine.
Around 70 guests were entertained by a string quartet featuring past and present students of Caistor Grammar School under the leadership of Mrs Fran Thomson, and the ‘guest of honour’ for the evening was the Revd Canon Dr Jeffrey Heskins.
The Vicar of Caistor, Canon Ian Robinson, commented that as well as providing a fundraising event, the evening was also about reaching out to the community to show that there is more to the church than services on a Sunday. As Ian has said, “Since the event we have received lots of positive comments from those who attended, and we have been the ‘talk of the town’ – in a positive way!”
