Lincoln Faiths Festival gets underway

25 April 2017

Lincoln Faiths F
estival, which aims to celebrate the diversity of Lincoln’s faith communities and their contribution to the wider community’ and to help people ‘increase their religious literacy’, is underway.

One of the highlights of the festival will be a free evening event titled Faith and Belief in Turbulent Times, which is to be held tomorrow (Wednesday, 26th April 2017) at the Jackson Lecture Theatre (Minerva Building) at the University of Lincoln (7pm for 7.30pm). An invited guest panel will explore this important issue and take some questions from the floor, and attendees are asked to kindly confirm their attendance by registering via Eventbrite.

Elsewhere, Lincoln Central Library and the parish church of St Mary le Wigford are currently hosting an exhibition of materials relating to faith. Visitors to St Mary le Wigford are offered an opportunity to see the Carpet of Wisdom Exhibition by Weaving Womens Wisdom, which features rugs produced by various community groups (as shown below).

Launched in 2014 by Touchstone, a church-based community project in Bradford, it is said that Weaving Women’s Wisdom has ‘worked alongside 20 groups in Britain and Pakistan to enable women to converse differently about matters of life and faith’. Each group was provided with a starter pack of materials and an invitation to create a rug, and the exhibition serves as a showcase of the results. (Opening times for this exhibition, which is accompanied by an exhibition on Islam, is available here.)

On the final day of the festival (Monday, 1st May 2017) there is to be a Web of Faiths Walk through the city. It is said that all of the walks will be led by identical banners showing a dove and the word Peace. The walks will all finish at St Mary le Wigford Church at around 11.45am, and the starting points are shown below:

  • From Bailgate Methodist Church at 11am

  • From the little Mosque on Orchard Street at 11.15am

  • From St Faiths Church on Charles St West at 11.15am

  • From Holy Cross Church on Skellingthorpe Road at 11am

  • From St Hughs Catholic Church on Monks Road at 11.15am.
