St Andrew's Church celebrates local heritage

07 November 2017

We were delighted to receive the following report of a recent event at St Andrews Church, Denton...

Earlier in the year, the Parochial Church Council (PCC) of St Andrew’s Church in Denton decided to take a step into the unknown and join in with the Heritage Lincolnshire Open Days. We filled in the forms answering the questions asked by Heritage Lincolnshire, and we decided to open the church for two days – we are, after all, only a small village, and although the church is always open, we would need members of the PCC to be available to welcome visitors.

The idea grew; we thought about photographs of old Denton so as to make a display, and we also welcomed a few stallholders. The offer of teas and coffees grew into teas, coffees and cake and then a produce stall, and so we made cakes and jams. By now the idea had really begun to blossom – villagers turned up with albums of photographs, treasured costumes and original paintings, plus donations of delicious cakes. In addition, the school kindly loaned log books and a register, and other people donated many items of memorabilia, such as photographs of the Denton Manor football and cricket teams. There were so many items that it is difficult to mention them all.

So many people came and the atmosphere was amazing. People enjoyed browsing, and there were so many ‘do you remembers?’ We estimate that we had about 160 people over the two days and we raised around £400 towards church funds. We have had many positive comments and requests to do it again! If you have any more treasures or stories to share and extend the record, please get in touch with either Jil (01476 87 05 01) or Virginia (01476 87 05 82).

Our special thanks to every one who helped and supported the event in any way.
