Following on from our recent article on the Revd Sonia Barron (Rector of the Claypole Benefice and Rural Dean of Loveden Deanery) and her sponsored walk to raise funds for the installation of toilet facilities at St Peter’s Church in Claypole, we are delighted to report that Sonia has successfully completed the walk.
Walking as part of the first phase of the Claypole Church and Community Project, Sonia completed the route from Lincoln Cathedral to Claypole parish church in very trying weather conditions, and to date she has raised more than £1500.
The Bishop of Lincoln sent Sonia and her son, Jonathan, on their way with a blessing, and they were later joined in the closing stages by the Bishop of Grantham. Speaking at the finishing line, Sonia said:
“I did it, supported by my eldest son, Jonathan, as map reader, members of the benefice who brought us sustenance along the way, the Bishop of Grantham (a very encouraging influence for the last seven miles), and all those who were rooting for me and following me on Facebook. The best quote of the journey came from Jonathan when we were almost at the end of the walk: ‘Are you going to walk home from church, Mum? You’ve walked 20 miles; [the distance home] is nothing’. I didn’t. After being given a welcome cup of tea at the end I had almost totally seized up. Needless to say he walked home!”
There is still time to sponsor Sonia, and an online sponsorship page is available here. The purpose of the walk is to help the church extend its welcome to the local community. As the Sonia’s Big Walk JustGiving page states, ‘...In addition to regular Sunday worship, we are seeking to restore the church’s presence as the centre of the community and for wider, more regular, community use to fulfil the vision of the Church to be hospitable, generous and having Christian distinctiveness... We desire to serve our local community with hospitality, generosity, hope and neighbourliness. So through this project we want to ensure that, as custodians of this building, it is available and accessible to everyone for the foreseeable future’.
A news story on the walk has recently been published on the Grantham Journal website.
