The role of an archdeacon is an ancient one, dating back to around the 11th century. The office has often been described as 'oculus episcopi'; literally meaning, the bishop's eye.

The archdeacon is responsible for an administrative section of the diocese (as delegated by the diocesan bishop),  the well-being of the clergy and clergy families of the diocese, implementation of diocesan policy and the church buildings in their archdeaconry.
