For over 100 years the Rose and Sweet Pea Show has been an annual fixture in the Priory Church calendar. Always held on the last Saturday in June, the horticultural show was an opportunity for local gardeners to display their edible and floral produce, including roses and sweet peas.

Older residents have fond memories of gathering with friends on what was then the Vicarage lawn to watch the entertainment and the crowning of the Rose Queen before enjoying tea and cake. A report of the event in 1929 mentioned dancing from 9pm to 11pm to Mrs Long’s Orchestra!

Nowadays the traditional mixes with the modern and attractions include music and dancing entertainment from local schools and groups, children’s games as well as the Grand Raffle and other attractions. This year there will be a Children’s Fancy Dress competition and there will be a variety of stalls run by local groups.

Details of how to enter the Horticultural Show are available on the church website. The classes have remained very much the same for many years, but children have an opportunity to enter several classes, including designing and making a parachute for a favourite teddy, which will then be tested by a Teddy Bear Drop from the church tower later in the afternoon.

Refreshments include afternoon teas, hot dogs, bacon rolls, and a licensed bar also serving soft drinks. Ice creams will be on sale.

We hope that many will come to enjoy an afternoon of fun for all ages.
