Judy Jeffries, Treasurer at St John's church in Holbeach Fen has raised a very impressive £1,300 for the church after completing a 41 mile cycle trip in three hours and eight minutes. That's a very speedy 13.3 miles per hour.

She said: Money is still coming in but I cannot believe it. I have been staggered by the response from people who have been donating. Some of the people who have donated live in the village but don't attend the church - they told me that they thought that the church is so important to the village and don't want to lose it."

Like many churches across the diocese the church has been affected by the coronavirus pandemic and has lost considerable funds due to the loss of fundraising opportunities.

"Our philosophy has always been to build a surplus up so that we can put away some money for repairs. We have been blessed and the community has really take the struggle on board" said Judy.

Judy had been practising for the ride and she set off early on Sunday 20th September with some of her family waving her off still in their pyjamas!

She said: "When I finished, I had some family and friends there cheering me on and it felt really good. I just thought that I've got to do this - I can't let people down and I need to get this money in - that's what kept me going. It's been such a heart warming journey and I had such fun doing it."

Judy has been fundraising for the church since 1973 and she is not ruling out another fundraising effort. She is very grateful to the local people: "Without the community support I wouldn't be able to do this."

She is still accepting donations - she can be contacted by telephone on 01406 540246 or email [email protected]
