Churches across the diocese are being encouraged to take part in the annual Lincolnshire Heritage Open Days, taking place this year between Friday 10 September and Sunday 19 September.

Lincolnshire Heritage Open Days is part of the National and European Heritage Open Days initiative. In Lincolnshire (including North and North East Lincolnshire), the programme of events has been co-ordinated by Heritage Lincolnshire for over twenty-five years.

The theme of this year's event is Voices of Lincolnshire: Stories Unheard, which it is hoped will inspire event organisers to celebrate the many voices of the county that have contributed to its heritage and culture, including ‘unheard voices’ that don’t usually get a lot of attention. Heritage Lincolnshire give the examples of stories from women, children, the working class and agricultural workers, minority groups and even animals that have contributed to the history of Lincolnshire.

Fran Bell, Church Development Officer at the Diocese of Lincoln, hopes that churches will consider taking part this year:

“It’s been a challenging year for churches with the changes to how services are delivered and the loss of visitor income. Taking part in Heritage Open Days is a great opportunity to share the unique stories of our churches to a wide audience, including aspects that some may not have heard before, and celebrate the history and heritage of church buildings in Lincolnshire.

Of course, we are hopeful that we can be fully using our church buildings again by September, thanks to the success of the vaccination programme, but if you have found yourself reaching a wider audience online, digital events are welcome too.”

Registration of Lincolnshire Heritage Open Day events is open until Friday 2 April and is being co-ordinated by Heritage Lincolnshire.

Events can be in person or digital and, as part of their support offer this year, Heritage Lincolnshire are running free workshops for event organisers including COVID19 Risk Management on Tuesday 23 March and Hosting a Digital Event on Tuesday 6 April.
