The Advent Wreath Festival was a highlight of the Christmas period for St Mary Magdalene Church in the Bailgate in Lincoln with 9,000 people visiting the church over the period of the festival in 2019. It is also a very valuable source of donations for the church and the charities that it supports.

Businesses decorate their wreaths in the theme of their commerce so the Post Office wreath features Postman Pat, the Whiskey Shop has incorporated miniature whiskey bottles into theirs and the clock shop even had a working clock in the middle of one of theirs. Photos from this year reveal a ‘woolly’ wreath that was created by a member of the church and a felt gingerbread man wreath from The Fabric Quarter.

Shirley Brook is a member of the Parochial Church Council at St Mary’s. She said: “Our Advent Wreath festival is always such a lovely festival and we weren’t going to let COVID19 spoil that so this year we are taking our Advent Wreath Festival online.  The businesses in the Bailgate Area Guild have again pulled out all the stops to create some wonderful wreaths and we have received some wonderful photos of their creations.  Everyone is encouraged to visit our Facebook page to see them and they are also being shared by Visit Lincoln which has been very supportive.

“This festival is very important for the church as it raises much needed funds not only for the church but for charities that the church supports. People are very generous and last year we managed to raise nearly £4,000. Although this year there is no physical display we are asking people if they can donate via our dedicated page at https://givealittle.co with all funds being split between the church, the Lincoln Community Larder and The Nomad Centre.”

All the wreaths can be seen on the St Mary Magdalene website and Facebook page.  Visit Lincoln @VisitLincoln has also been promoting the Wreath display using the hashtag #ChristmasInLincoln to share images across Visit Lincoln's Social Media to help further spread the virtual festive cheer.
