Crown Nominations Commission

Following the resignation of Bishop Christopher Lowson in December 2021, the Vacancy in See committee of the diocese has been meeting to consult on and prepare a statement of needs to describe the diocese and what it is looking for in the next bishop. As part of its work the committee also elects by ballot from amongst its members representatives to be members of the Crown Nominations Commission (CNC). The CNC shortlists and interviews candidates. The Archbishops of Canterbury and York are also members alongside six elected members from General Synod.

The election was held at its recent meeting and the CNC members chosen are:

Canon Nigel Bacon

The Revd Sonia Barron

The Ven Gavin Kirk

Canon Professor Muriel Robinson

Mrs Sue Slater

The Revd Cameron Watt

A breakdown of the election, by Single Transferrable Vote, can be found here

Anyone who wishes to express views on the appointment of a new bishop or who has names of suitable candidates is invited to write to the diocese’s elected CNC members above by 3rd January 2023 by email at [email protected] or by post to Edward King House, Minster Yard, Lincoln LN2 1PU. The representatives will not be able to enter into correspondence. Please pray for all those involved in the process, and especially for the Commission and its members.

Crown Nominations Commission meetings will take place on the following dates.

  • Virtual ‘Role Specification’ meeting with CNC on 21 November from 1730-1900
  • Physical CNC 1 meeting (shortlisting) on 24 February 2023
  • Physical CNC 2 meeting on 28 & 29 March 2023

Statement of Needs

The committee also finalised the Statement of Needs. This lays out a description of the diocese and, after widespread discussion and consultation, what the diocese needs in the new bishop. This goes to the CNC to guide their thinking and discernment.

Prayer for Discernment

Heavenly Father,
in your Son, Jesus Christ,
the whole Body of the Church is joined together as one
with Christ as the Head.
Be with us, by your Holy Spirit,
as we pray for the appointment of a new bishop of Lincoln.
Guide all involved in the appointment process,
that with prayer, faith and honest reflection,
they may discern your will
that your Kingdom may come,
in this diocese, and in the world.
Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
