A team from St Nicholas' on Newport in Lincoln experimented with a contemplative outdoor worship for the Ascension Day celebration service this year.

The weather was blissfully sunny and mild while members of the church and passers-by pilgrimaged around the sunken garden that lies on the site of one of the old churches on Newport. There were four prayer-stations, each of which focused on one of the Ascension Day lectionary readings, supported by a warm sermon from Rev’d Hugh.

Worshipers were guided in reflecting prayerfully on the humanity of God through Christ’s ascension, and anticipation of the disciples in waiting of the coming of the Holy Spirit as they tried to make sense of what they witnessed.

A worshipper commented: "It was wonderful to bring Christian faith and worship outside the Church as a creative expression of discipleship and an opportunity for evangelism."
