The Service of Welcome for the new Bishop of Grimsby

A warm welcome

People from far and wide came together at Lincoln Cathedral on Sunday 26 April 2026 to welcome The Rt Revd Jean Burgess as the new Bishop of Grimsby. The Service of Welcome was a very special event that recognised the beginning of a new chapter for the Diocese of Lincoln.

There were representatives from churches and communities who wanted to be with and congratulate Jean. It was a time to celebrate the start of her important ministry as the first woman bishop with episcopal leadership of the north of the diocese.

Bishop Jean was formally presented during the service as representatives from church and civic life offered a warm and energetic welcome – as everyone recognised her “as a servant and shepherd of the people of God.”

A time of worship and praise

The service included hymns, worship songs and choral music, which brought music together from across the Christian traditions. With all songs and hymns personally chosen by Bishop Jean, the music brought everyone together in praise and prayer while reflecting the joy and thanksgiving of the event.

The sermon delivered by Bishop Jean shared her journey of faith and how she wants everyone to know more deeply the life-changing love of Jesus. There were also readings from Ephesians 2:11-22 and from the gospel was read from Luke 19:37-48.

who comes in the name of the Lord!
Peace in heaven,
and glory in the highest heaven!” (Luke 19:38)

Entrusted with the symbols of ministry

During the service, symbols of episcopal ministry were presented to Bishop Jean. They recognise the role the bishop will have in teaching, leading and serving the church. These included a bible, chalice and pastoral staff. They highlight the shared calling for the whole Church to proclaim the Good News and be steadfast witnesses while faithfully serving communities.

Prayers and well wishes

The service was a joyful time with plenty of people wishing Jean well as she begins her ministry in our diocese. It was a real blessing to see both the Bishop of Grantham and Acting Bishop of Lincoln as well as the Bishop of Grimsby united together in their commitment to serving all of God’s people in Greater Lincolnshire.
