Join us for a one-day symposium exploring the fascinating 19th-century battle of architectural styles and its lasting impact on today’s designs. This event, organized by the Petit Society, will delve into the work of Rev. John Louis Petit, a prominent critic of the Gothic revival and advocate for architectural originality and preservation.
The symposium will feature three keynote lectures and contributions from both academic and local historians.
Highlights include:
- 10:15 AM: Keynote Lecture 1 – “Synthesizing Tradition and Progress: JL Petit Leading the Opposition to Gothic” by Philip Modiano, Chair of the Petit Society
- 11:00 AM: Keynote Lecture 2 – “Petit’s Promotion of Byzantine Architecture as an Alternative to the Gothic Revival” by Dr. Nikos Karydis, University of Kent
- 11:45 AM: Short Presentations and Discussions
- 12:30 PM – 2:00 PM: Lunch Break (Bring your own lunch or dine at local establishments) and Exhibition Viewing
- 2:00 PM: Short Presentations and Discussions
- 3:30 PM: Keynote Lecture 3 – Title to be announced, by Dr. Kyle Leyden, Courtauld Institute of Art
