Many across the diocese are deeply saddened following the death of the Revd Canon Christine Goldsmith on Thursday 30 July 2026.
Chris died following a short illness while serving faithfully as Rector of the Wolds Gateway Group, Rural Missioner for North East Lincolnshire, and as a dedicated member of the diocesan Mission Enablers team.
She joined the Diocese of Lincoln in 2019, where she brought a wealth of experience from ministry in the Diocese of Cyprus and the Gulf. Throughout her time in Lincolnshire, she became widely known for her energy, compassion, and commitment to sharing the Christian faith.
She also served as Rector of the parishes of Welbourn, Leadenham, Brant Broughton and Beckingham. Her pastoral care and encouragement touched many lives.
A passionate advocate for rural ministry, Chris devoted herself to supporting churches and communities across some of the county’s most dispersed areas, particularly in rural areas. Her heart for rural mission was evident in every aspect of her service.
Chris was made a Canon of Lincoln Cathedral in 2025, this title reflected her leadership and dedication. It signified the esteem in which she was held by colleagues and congregations alike.
The Acting Bishop of Lincoln, The Rt Revd Dr Nicholas Chamberlain, said:
“I share in the sorrow over Christine’s death yet recognise how profoundly inspiring her legacy will be to many who knew her. Christine brought an effervescent energy to any place while having a deep desire to carry out God’s will with her can-do attitude.
“While many will remember her most recently for Saints Alive, she deeply loved the many different communities that were and had been previously under her care.
“Whenever I met with Christine, her beloved canine companions were never far behind. Her smile always went ahead!
“My deepest condolences go to her husband Rick and family. May she rest in peace and rise in glory.”
Christine’s funeral will take place on Friday 14 August at 2pm at St Edmunds Church, Riby, Grimsby, DN37 8NX.
